Newt Gingrich’s Sad Audition To Be Donald Trump’s Vice President

From HuffPo:

Now that reality-television star and gilded yeti Donald Trump has pretty much secured the GOP nomination, attention has begun to shift to who might claim the honor of being Trump’s running mate. This should naturally be of great interest to everyone, if for no other reason than the person chosen may well be left holding the bag when Donald Trump finds out just how hard being president is. (He does not think it’s an even remotely difficult job.) There has already been a lot of talk of possible short lists, and an equal amount of talk about who doesn’t want the job under any circumstances (Marco Rubio).

But in case you haven’t noticed, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and failed presidential candidate really, really wants to be Donald Trump’s vice president. Oh, man! He wants it so bad! He does not even try to hide it.

And that’s a bit of a break with tradition. Those with some interest in the position usually tend to dance gingerly around the subject whenever it is broached by reporters. And it is broached often. Right now, every prominent politician who appears on a Sunday morning political show is going to face seven different iterations of the, “Will you serve as vice president, if asked?” every time they appear. Generally speaking, such politicos sidestep the dogged journalism of the Chuck Todds of the world by dropping canned lines like, “I love my job“ or, “I’m not thinking about another job.”

Not so for Gingrich, who has dropped nearly all pretense about his ambition.

In many ways, Trump and Gingrich would seem to fit well together. Both men can boast of having their difficulties with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) — the Ryan agenda, which Trump has famously said he doesn’t know if he’d support, was referred to by Gingrich as “right-wing social engineering.” Both Trump and Gingrich tilt toward grandiosity when discussing their ideas — maybe they could get Mexico to fund Gingrich’s plan for moon colonization alongside the magic border wall our southern neighbor will be subsidizing. And, of course, both men are famous for being — well — let’s call it “maritally ambidextrous.”

Actually, such a ticket would complete a poisonous circuit: Gingrich's congressional triumph in 1994 ushered in the era of Republican obstructionism, and the Orange Monstrosity has reaped the benefit
of our cowardly corporate media's failure to point it out.

Chinese state media breaks silence on Cultural Revolution

BEIJING (AP) — China's official media reaffirmed on Tuesday the Communist Party's longstanding judgment that the Cultural Revolution was a catastrophic mistake after staying silent on Monday's 50th anniversary of the start of the decade-long upheaval.

The official party mouthpiece People's Daily published an opinion piece on its website precisely at midnight on Tuesday unequivocally praising the 1981 party resolution that condemned the bloody political movement launched by Mao Zedong to enforce a radical egalitarianism.

"Our party has long taken a solemn attitude toward bravely admitting, correctly analyzing and firmly correcting the mistakes of our leadership figures," the piece read.

The party has long suppressed open discussion of the tumultuous period, fearing that could undermine its legitimacy to rule and lead to direct criticism of Mao, the founder of the communist state who remains a revered figure.

Kentucky, Oregon Election Polls 2016: Bernie Sanders Trailing Hillary Clinton Ahead Of Democratic Pr

Source: International Business Times

By Tim Marcin On 05/16/16 AT 5:10 PM

After losing West Virginia last week to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will try to get back on the winning side of things Tuesday in Kentucky and Oregon's presidential primaries. The most recent polls show she could have a shot at taking both states.

There's a dearth of recent polling in Kentucky, but Clinton has ramped up efforts in the state, planning an additional two days of campaigning. It's a closed primary, which keeps out independent voters, who have largely favored Sanders on a national scale. The most recent poll available, a March Public Policy Polling survey that talked with 501 likely Democratic voters, found Clinton led Sanders by five percentage points, 43 percent to 38 percent. Of course, a lot has changed since March.

There's been more recent polling in Oregon, and the results are projecting good news for the Clinton camp. An Oregon Public Broadcasting poll carried out by DHM Research between May 6 and May 9 found Clinton led by 15 percentage points, 48 percent to 33 percent. The Oregon primary is closed.

Despite recent victories for Sanders in West Virginia and Indiana, the delegate math is still heavily in Clinton's favor. The former secretary of state leads 1,716 to 1,433 in pledged delegates and 524 to 40 in superdelegates, according to the New York Times' count. Sanders would need to win some 70 percent of the remaining votes to tilt the delegate scale in his favor heading into the Democratic convention in July.

In surprising turnabout, Oklahoma eyes Medicaid expansion

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Despite bitter resistance in Oklahoma for years to President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, Republican leaders in this conservative state are now confronting something that alarms them even more: a huge $1.3 billion hole in the budget that threatens to do widespread damage to the state's health care system.

So, in what would be the grandest about-face among rightward leaning states, Oklahoma is now moving toward a plan to expand its Medicaid program to bring in billions of federal dollars from President Obama's new health care system.

What's more, GOP leaders are considering a tax hike to cover the state's share of the costs.

"We're to the point where the provider rates are going to be cut so much that providers won't be able to survive, particularly the nursing homes," said Republican state Rep. Doug Cox, referring to possible cuts in state funds for indigent care that could cause some hospitals and nursing homes to close.
